Dressing for Cold Weather:

Step One: Base Layers
Base layer is the layer worn next to the skin and should be moisture-wicking. Base layers made of 100% merino or a wool blend work best to regulate your child’s temperature. It is lightweight and allows children to move around and play. Base layers include the top, bottom, and socks! Avoid cotton as your base layers. Cotton absorbs very easily and takes a long time to dry. Some great brands to check out are: L.L. Bean, Smartwool, and Ella's Wool.

Step Two: Mid Layers
Choose something that is flexible and slightly roomy! Fleece is a great option! It should be heavier than the base layer. We recommend a mid layer that is easy to remove or throw on if your child gets too warm or cold. Check out these brands: Patagonia, Backcountry, REI.

Step Three: Outer Layers
The final and most important layer is the outer layer. The outer layer should be waterproof (not water-resistant) because this layer is designed to keep out the wind, rain, or snow. This applies to jackets and pants. Great brands to check out are: Polarnopyret, L.L. B.ean, and Oaki.

Shoes/boots that are waterproof are an absolute necessity during the colder months in Wisconsin. Our feet and hands are usually the first to get cold. Finding a shoe/boot that keeps the elements out is essential. We recommend Bogs, Oaki, and Stonz.

We also recommend hats, waterproof gloves, and a face mask/neck warmer. Having gloves that are waterproof and ideally with a wrist strap (to keep them secure on little hands) help to keep hands warmer for longer.

With the right fabrics, your child should only need three layers. Remember to keep the layers loose, as too tight of clothing will push out all the warm air. Having the right gear makes all the difference when outdoors.
